Cuyler Road Renovation

Material Design Build designed and constructed this addition, bathroom and kitchen renovation to 1950s era ranch house. The addition creates a new living room and transition to the dining area. Large, commercial-style windows provide views through the front porch to back patio. Heat is provided through the concrete slab, stained a deep hue to echo patina-ed copper accents throughout.  The space makes extensive use of reclaimed materials: the yellow pine structural timbers, antique doors and hand-hammered copper gutters repurposed as drawer fronts and trim.

The kitchen renovation required keeping plumbing fixtures in their original position and re-used the existing stainless counters with welded-in sink and cork floors. The new cabinets were built of solid birch plywood with black walnut doors and drawers.

The bathroom also required keeping plumbing fixtures in their original location. Locally reclaimed balsam fir flooring covers the walls and soffit, and is accented by salvaged cherry. The black walnut vanity was custom-built to provide ample storage and a built-in seat for changing.
