Farmer’s House
When our clients purchased this 200+ acre farm, it came with quite a number of barns, outbuildings, and one unique item: a farmer. As part of their purchase agreement, the farmer would live on the farm for the rest of his life, and our clients decided to build a new farmhouse - one that would fit his needs and then be adaptable in the future.
Perched at the top of the hill, the house is fortified with an envelope built to passive house standards. Resting on a frost-protected concrete slab, the walls are 16" thick, and the roof has raised heel trusses for thick layers of insulation. The first floor is designed to be accessible with a first-floor suite, while the second floor has 3 bedrooms and 3 baths, with additional room for expansion above the garage. The house consumes so little energy that it's almost entirely offset by the solar array that captures the southern light.
