Kerhonkson Residence
Our clients approached us with a distinctive vision for their 60+ acre parcel in Kerhonkson, NY: a dramatic landscape that transitions from steep pine and hemlock forest to a rolling hilltop meadow. Their brief called for more than a simple country house – they sought to create a compound that could host large groups while maintaining an intimate connection to the landscape throughout all seasons.
We positioned the main house to take advantage of the hilltop's natural contours, orienting it to capture specific views while creating protected outdoor spaces. A large patio extends the living space into the landscape as grass swales cut with stone risers transition to the pond below.
The compound's buildings share a material palette that speaks to both durability and refinement. We focused on modest bedroom proportions paired with generous communal spaces, using large windows and thoughtful transitions to blur the boundary between inside and out. The pond house and deck are a hub for refreshing summer swims and, in sauna season, a launch pad for a cold plunge. Northern red salamanders and an armada of frogs have also moved in to take advantage of this natural oasis. The garage structure incorporates a fully-appointed loft apartment above, maximizing the use of each building footprint.
Each structure embodies our dedication to high-performance building practices. Generous levels of insulation pair with a triple pane window and exterior package to create an efficient envelope, while mechanical systems provide clean continuously circulating air throughout. These technical elements work quietly in the background, ensuring comfort while minimizing environmental impact. Wherever possible we have used materials with low embodied carbon and the property is powered by a large 24.7 kW photovoltaic array.
Throughout the project, we worked closely with our clients to ensure each decision reinforced their vision of a true retreat – a place where groups could gather for outdoor activities while maintaining the comfort and functionality needed for extended stays. The result is a collection of buildings that feel both purposeful and organic to the site, with clear provisions for future expansion as the property's programs evolve.
